Smartphone + Mirror = Fail
For me, a night of having a beer transitioning into an outrageous number of shots is always a great time for reflection and humorous thoughts on society. Its not that I go out by myself and turn bottles upside down, its just that while in these social situations I always find myself taking a deeper look into social trends and things "cool kids" do that I think are completely and utterly lame.
A few weekends ago, I had just left a meeting and was fly-er than I had to be for a night out in Indianapolis. I could get into the whole Indy fashion scene, but honestly I don't know if I could fill up this post with info. Anyway, I took a break from the never-ending circle of walking around the club to shoot to the restroom. After finishing my "business," (There is probably some great way to say "I took a piss" in a literary sense, but give me a break) I'm looking in the mirror like thinking, "Man, I've been getting looks and compliments all night, I should take a picture." As I pulled out my phone to take a picture, I stopped myself and thought, there is no way in hell I could take myself seriously after taking a picture of myself, in the mirror, of a club. I understand having a friend take a picture, more specifically if you're a woman, just because its damn near pregnant-pause worthy for a man to ask another man to take his picture, but the pretentiousness of the whole thing is mind-boggling.
Subconsciously or consciously, you have to tell yourself that you look good enough to want to keep mirror photo for your phone's memory. No one asks to be the photographer, just you and your own thoughts.
My thing is, how awkward would it be if someone happened to walk in the restroom?
I mean, how would that conversation or swift interaction not be awkward?
There are some candid moments that cannot be ignored, but photographing yourself just isn't one of them in my book. If your boyfriend is over in Iraq, yes, I can see getting all "done up." If your aunt hasn't seen you in awhile and you just want to snap a quick photo, of course take that picture. The social network profile picture is not the place for such shots. Sure, you don't want to waste an outfit, but seriously let life happen, someone will notice and there you will have your photo.
You will never, in your entire life, see me photographing myself in a mirror. By no means am the judge of all things cool, but I cringe every time I see one of my friends trying to make that awkward, "I'm not trying to look cool, but I really am trying to look cool face." The whole concept of taking your own picture is nothing, but an experiment in a person way to caught up in oneself.
