Ambiance

For some reason I could never do my best work at the crib (home, if you re one of those pro-black folks who thinks using such slang sets us back). I'm pretty sure it stemmed from the fact that home is home, not work; however when this current project I'm working on presented itself, home seemed like the perfect place to flex my literary muscles.
I've been through so much there, good and bad, but it was always outside experiences which showed me the most about myself. I grew immensely under the tutelage of my parents, but its tough to act on such "teachings" in front of them. The best tests came far away, and I guess the same thing seems to be apparent in my writing.
Looking around this Starbucks as a have for the past few months, I see people from all walks of life, and these are the same people I hope to reach in some way (directly or indirectly) with this book. Sure, they are all different, but there are so many similarities between "the Starbucks type" that it matters not if you have the doctor look or you look like you've just finished a 10-hour shift in a factory without air conditioning.
Its all about finding your place to reach your level, to zone out and really hammer some things out. Is this the perfect place? No, but it works and I take advantage. I plug my headphones in, look over my notes, and go in. Some dim lights and these cool chairs that I could almost swear were the same ones Neo and Morpheus were sitting on in the original Matrix. I never needed much, just my own thoughts and an environment putting on the facade of calm.
The facade of calm, because I'm not sure what these other people are going through. This Starbucks for the lady sitting beside me, could be her release from work and a prelude to the rest of her night spent with her kids who she must provide for all on her own. You never know.
But rather than asking these questions I'll let the ambiance be my guide and continue, in a Bill Bellamy voice: "Just puttin' in work"
